Title: Re: [nafex] varigated chestnut
IF the sucker is from the roots, it might be possible to cut it loose from the main tree and grow it on it's own. Otherwise, you would have propagate it by layering or grafting.
One thing about variegated types - many are not stable. Often, they will try to send out normal shoots a lot. If you look at the stem of the variegated sucker, you will probably see light colored stripes or streaks on the stem. Follow one up and it probably runs into a variegated leaf. These kinds of mutants are known as sectorial chimeras (remember, the chimera was a mythical beast made up of several other animals) because they are composed of sections of normal tissue and sections of albino tissue. Because the albino parts don't make food (no green chloroplasts), sections that have them are less vigorous, and the more vigorous, normal, fully green sections usually outdo them and take over.
In short, variegated types have an annoying tendency to "run out" when you try to propagate them.

A local landscaper just came to my home.
One of his clients has a chestnut, suckering.
One sucker is varigated
Is this common
As there are no roots here, how could we propogate this varigated sucker-- by ground layering?
Did not have time to go/see as on way to family funeral
Any yhoughts?
