Another consideration is the physical capability of the horse. My 8 yr. old 16'2" 1400 lb. AQHA gelding can go all day long. My smaller 18 yr. Mustang would have a hard time keeping up. My other horse is quiet, but physically may not be suited for the work. Also, the horse has to be physically used to the variety of work environment challenges. You can't just be an occasional rider and expect the horse to run the equivalent of a marathon, without training.

Sherrel,

Any method of training for MSAR horses that will produce a quiet responsive
animal will do. MSAR horses need to be able to deal with a wide variety of
environments. Think about what happens when you have the search dogs out.
There are emergency vehicles, people of all sorts, dogs, airplanes, etc. The
horse must be able to work without becoming upset by these distractions. Use
your imagination and introduce the horses to strange things. I took mine to the

train station, for example.

The archives of this list are a great resource for all you need to know about
MSAR. Welcome to the world of mounted searching.

Lois

Hello

I have been in canine SAR for about 3 years. I am also a member of OSRT and
OSRT in Ohio is starting a mounted unit. Right now there is 3 of us. I would
like for you to tell me how to start training our horses. What horseanality
traits do you look for in a SAR horse? What is the first thing do I need to get

the horses proficent in?

The OSRT leaders here have decided to use Maryland MSAR to model after.

I have 2 horses myself, and I follow Parelli training with them. So their
manners are pretty good. A Morab mare, age 15 and an Icelandic gelding, age
16. The Morab is a flighty. The Icelandic is much quieter.
