They were slick Westerns, you can’t wear tall riding
boots on airplanes anymore (no jacks or hooks at security). I don’t
walk anymore anyway, that’s what the horse is for. Irv From: msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org
[mailto:msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Jorene Downs I’ve worn
nothing but Ariats on my feet for many years, because they fit my arch well to
provide excellent support. But boots are a very personal fit, as well as being
rather specific to what works well in that terrain and weather if you end up
hiking. Any boot taller than mid calf would be a problem for anyone trying to
hike in our steep mountain terrain - but taller may be valuable for someone
hiking through a deeper soggy area. In general pull-on boot types wouldn’t
be suitable, lacking ankle support for hiking in more uneven terrain. The type of sole may
also be an issue, since some are designed better for secure footing on more
slippery surfaces than others. (I saw Irv slip and fall on a short grassy slope
at a SAR conference a few years ago. Nobody else in the group slipped, so
hopefully the boots / soles he was wearing then aren’t what he uses for
SAR / MSAR if he ever hikes out in the field or off-trail.) Wear a brand that
fits your foot well, because a poor fit will tire you more quickly. Choose the
hiking ankle support, sole, height, breathability, water resistance, insulated
or not, etc., based on local terrain challenges, weather, etc. Choose the kind
of support and protection needed, but also consider that a heavier boot will
tire you more quickly if you’re hiking, too. Also take into consideration
where you might respond for Mutual Aid and if the boot choices would be
suitable there. Many may find a “ride
and hike” boot (similar to a higher top tennis shoe, but with a riding
heel) to be a good option in most terrain and weather conditions –
several riding boot brands make them. Like Laurie, I wear Ariat Terrains. - - - - - - Jorene
Downs SAR & CERT Mounted SAR From: Lila Corey Can anyone tell me what type of
boots you have found the best for MSAR? I prefer tall boots- have a pair
of Dublin - used them on a search that ended up being on foot for 5 hours,
raining and swampy- got a little damp the last hour- they are suppose to be
waterproof but some dampness did penetrate. I am in NC, so extreme temps
are not USUALLY a problem, but I am extremely cold natured, do much better hot
than cold. Lila |
