It appears that it is the flex in a
treeless saddle that does the rubbing. If you are on a plantation horse and
riding flat so the saddle does not flex it will not rub. On the other hand the so called advantage
of the treeless or spring tree saddle is that it does flex as weight comes on
or off or changes from the seat to the stirrups. I have seen endurance horses rubbed raw in
50 miles or less of moderate trail and others that swear by the treeless
saddles. Be aware of any saddle that “requires” a matched pad
– they probably move too much on a regular pad. I use Cool Backs
which are sized for the saddle (Western rectangular pad, 40 x 30 or so) and
made of a pile fiber called Kodel which wicks without soaking through. I
had 2 made when I had the saddle made in 1990 and one is still in the bag—the
other dries in less than 24 hours. And there was no extra charge for
custom sizing. If you have never seen a big cold blood
move under saddle you have missed an awesome sight. The next closest is
watching a pair of Percherons move a coach or a wagon with precision and
balance, showing no effort. Irv Lichtenstein From:

never had a problem with rubs. Maybe having a gaited horse makes the
difference ? I have used them on 4 of my horses with no problems at
all. |
