Our organization requires that each horse
and rider complete a 180 degree turn in a confined space (which requires a turn
on the fore or hind). The rider has the choice of turning on either the
fore or hind in order to complete this task. In total, we test almost 3
dozen equestrianism related skills during our horse and rider evaluation, which
takes about 5 hours to complete. Personal note: I am not sure what type of
team does “not” require this type of maneuver, but every MSAR equine
must be able to turn around within its own body length. I have traveled across
the country and have met numerous MSAR folk and this topic has frequently come
up in discussion. Through my personal experience I have found that is the
weaker, less skilled riders that complain the most about MSAR skills/testing
being too difficult. I know of no real life certified MSAR teams that do
not test on confined space turns (fore or hind). However, there are
several online or paper MSAR teams that require nothing more than to send them money
and who require no documented field testing at all to become a member. Which
type of MSAR team would you want searching for a loved one? T’mi
I am a member of Contra Costa County Sheriffs Search and Rescue in
CA. Our Equestrian Resource requires our horse rider teams to perform
most of the common tasks I have seen on other units web sites, an issue among
our group is a requirement to turn the horse on the forehand and hind quarters
in hand and mounted. One opinion is this is unreasonable because other
units do not require it and they see no need. The other opinion is riders
should be able to move any part of the horse when desired. Do any of your
organizations require the forehand and hind quarter turns? |
