Irv, you're close to civilization and helicopters. Folks in more remote
wilderness SAR don't have all your resource advantages. Remember to keep in
perspective that there are many areas in the country (and world) where a
helicopter may NOT be available, may not have safe access, may be many hours
away, etc. Nor is every type of injury or health issue a major emergency
requiring activating a helicopter flight to major medical care.

This is why SAR management needs to have identified alternatives, which was
the subject I was responding to on the other discussion group. This is why I
mentioned that riders trained to evaluate and transport someone in the
saddle are a proven viable alternative, are a very useful option in many
situations, and may be the fastest option.
