Some time ago, the topic of search units assisting authorities in parking lot duty came up. Una asked that I share a little about our efforts and the results of such.
While our mission is to search, and we work under the auspices of the Licking County Emergency Management Agency, our unit has assisted the local Sheriff's Department in several parking lot duty efforts. This has resulted in a stronger working relationship with this department.
Recently, the Licking County Sheriff's Department hosted a training for search units that included an attack demonstration by their K-9 unit, observed by the horses. This was followed by obstacle training, flare training, field sweeping and negotiation of thickets in a large group.
The Sheriff's Department also hosted a "Crowd Control" training last spring, which was very beneficial before a week long duty during a local fair. Unit members were also trained in methodology for escorting vehicles out of a crowd.
In the photo of the group sweeping a field, the Capt. is on the far right. Though our unit has been called out to search several times in the past 2-3 years, we have volunteered many more hours through parade or parking lot duties. Those efforts have been an avenue to demonstrate our desire to serve, train and to respect the chain of command.
