The LaSalle County (IL) Sheriff’s MSAR Posse recently aided in a search where a seventy-three year old man was found a quarter mile into a corn field following a month long search.  He had ridden/walked a three wheel bike along the edge of the field which was surrounded by timber on two sides and a river-- still high following a flood--- on two sides.  The bike was found about 15 feet into the corn, and the man walked about a quarter mile down the same corn row to the place where his remains were recovered.

The assumption was that the man could not have gotten the bike into the corn and that he would not have gone into the corn which was still green, dense, and able to cut the skin.  However, this assumption was not correct.  The man was known to have dementia.

Has anyone had experience with a search ending in a corn field when the corn was mature?  Were there signs that that a person had entered the field? Were there motives established for entering the field?  Has anyone experienced a search where the person managed to get to a place where it was thought to be inaccessible?
