Garmin GPS is good for canaries especially in the low end models.  They have handheld units as do many other companiies.  Satellite application, becareful where you park!  You will lose your antenna signals if blocked by tall structures including trees, buildings, mountains.

Most GPS need to be upgraded in software periodically.

One of the units we are looking into to upgrade is by Teletype.

www.teletype.com has a number of models.   They have an excellent unit for the big rigs including hazmat friendly, trucker friendly low bridge, other road obstacle application.   While on the trail, this may not seem like it would matter, but if you are driving a large rig to a site, Teletype is highly recommended and prefered by many professional OTR drivers.  While the equine rig might not be that large, the OTR information does have its other appliications.
