Try DeLorme software. I have purchased the whole shebang....GPS, Topo and satelite disc of the state I live in. Works pretty well! For those of us, (I'm ashamed to admit I'm one of them) who just has a helluva time deciphering a topo map, the satelite imiage on the GPS helps to know just where I am. The prices are all pretty reasonable and I have had great luck with customer support.

While they may work for a dog, I am just wondering on those SAR with search dogs if they have found these whistles effective in training.? As MSAR teams and? SAR teams work areas nearby, has any of the mounteds come across problems with their horses that might stem from that?? Do any of the SAR dog units?use them?? They seem to be a more obsolete method, but was just curious.?And, just as a loud whistle may spook a horse, has anyone taken in account the "quiet" whistle? ? How about those "deer" whistles on the bumpers on cars...Speeding traffic is bad enough, but those whistles can spook a mount big time. ? And on the topic of the kids and their fanny packs, as ALL?subjects get fatiqued, they have a tendency to lose what they carry or wear.?? Parents do best to equip their kids with high visibility colors.? A florescent pink or shocking yellow? or glowing orange?is far better to let the kids have then camo.? ? K. I have seen presentations by ESRI, whose client software (ArcView) is free and will subsidize some purchases by non-profits through an in-house grant program, and Pictometry, a company that takes oblique digital aerial photos and can provide the service results either through a county that bought the service or has a Beta web based version for about $80/month for 5 users, 1 at a time. Our county uses both ESRI and Pictometry (there is a bridge software package that allows you to combine them) with the data on an external drive of 600 Gig. Pictures are taken in the fall about every two years. As to layering and marking pictures Corel used to have a package that allowed you to use the picture as a map (base layer) and then add layers on top, but it was not automatic input, you had to key in the waypoints. As this package was an art production package originally I would expect that similar photo markup software exists in the graphic arts world and is probably cheaper and easier to run than Photoshop. Trail Riders of Today lends out their GPS units to its members and provides them with basic instructions on GPS , then when the unit is returned GPS data is uploaded to a personal computer. Several of the aerial trail maps can be viewed online at <http://www.trot-md.org/parks.php> There is also a link to contact the Mapping Coordinator, who would be happy to speak with in depth about the details of project. For MSAR applications, our Mounted Team uses MapTech software and uploads GPS data to record trail data on topo maps. We like MapTech because the user can create a custom topo map that will center the search area to the field map. Waypoints and other search information such as the ICP, staging area. PLS, Clue #5 and/or base camps can be added as needed. Locating trails in a search area provides both a hasty search, plus provides the search manager with a better operational picture of the search area. Most search managers in our 5 State region use UTM coordinates, so make sure that your GPS and related software are set properly. It should be noted that some County governments in urban areas use Lat/Long coordinates to support their GIS data systems, so a (Lat/Long to UTM) conversion program would be a good thing to have. I use it a lot when working on maps for work because it finds aerial photos, topo maps, satellite images, etc real easily for your base map. The other thing I like about it is the low cost.
