After bringing my border terrier back from three days in intensive care from a coyote attack, I just have to respond to any comment that they are not detrimental.  A pack roams the area around my farm; sometimes they are here, sometimes just passing through.  They have taken chickens, ducks, sheep, cats, and now tried to take my dog.  I fail to see their benefit, sorry.  They didn't come here naturally but were brought into Alabama in the 30's by fox hunters, dang it.
My horses watch them but don't show any fear at all and have never been attacked.  HOWEVER a very good friend lost both a mare and her foal while she was foaling in his pasture. These coyotes are very bold and come into my yard in broad daylight.  If they see me, they retreat, slowly, but not really afraid.  I personally have never been threatened. They are COYOTES, not coy-dogs!
A friend's horse became very nervous riding a few miles from here a year or so ago and mtn. lion tracks were found later within 100 feet, but it was never seen.  I have no idea how he would have reacted if the lion had shown itself and neither does he.  I'll forward these suggestions to him, thanks.
I have NEVER had a horse show any interest at all in any snake and we have run across many of those in our trips. Still on the lookout for bears as we have those here, too. Also, any rider doing SAR should be familiar with self-defense techniques on horseback.  Your horse is your ally there... lots of seminars and instructors teach this.
My fear is to be confronted with some predator, animal OR human, and falling off my horse, so I guess the bottom line is that no matter what happens, try to stay on.
