The latest SARNews indicates SAR was deployed during the So CA wildfires.

While more commonly considered an ESF #9 resource with the word "rescue" in the name, in other disasters SAR has been activated as ESF #8 doing welfare checks, etc., in just about any weather conditions.  In some more remote areas, apparently local SAR personnel are also the initial local EMS / ambulance-type response. SAR also has - perhaps only available through mutual aid - personnel capable of being inserted by helicopter, self-sufficient for up to 72 hours, into a less accessible impacted area to provide initial assistance while primary First Responder deployment is focused on more populated areas.

What other use for SAR personnel has been planned and/or applied for emergency / disaster incidents other than the obvious "someone is lost" more common role? (ESF#9, #8, Logistics, or ...?)

Input is appreciated ... I'm collecting examples. (Respond on private email, if you prefer.) And yes, this request for input includes all the SAR specialties ... mountain / technical rescue, trackers, SAR dogs, Mounted SAR, swiftwater, mechanized, etc.
