The story moved on the AP yesterday. Although described as equivalent of a
3-4 year there is no published evidence of retarded physical or mental
development. Autism affects communication and social trust. The boy is
approximately 18 years old and fully developed physically. Unlike a person
who physically cannot communicate verbally (deaf or mute) the disease
prevents the subject from using his skills in a meaningful manner. He will
hear and he will verbalize but there is no indication he would trust a
searcher to approach them and be "rescued". The behavioral problems here
require expert advice on strategy and tactics.
