I cannot imagine being able to maintain my activity with SAR if I were not self employeed as I am. SAR missions nearly always take a highest priority for me and being self employeed makes that possible. Perhaps I am kidding myself and I'm digging myself a huge financial hole, but at this point I am unwilling to give up my flexibility in exchange for a better paying actual job.
I am lucky enough to have a neighbor to feed for me when I take off on missions. My clients don't mind being blown off for a day or two because they are horses and don't wear watches. Even so, the work load from SAR can get very heavy. Those of you that can do this while maintaining a firmly structured job with someone else have more self-control than I do!
There are a few members of my SAR unit that have great working relationships with their companies. When paged out, they are 100% encouraged to go on the mission and it is considered paid leave. Now that sounds like the best of all worlds!
Good luck, Matthew. One of my current clients is a UPS driver and has no last minute flexibility in her schedule whatsoever.

What jobs work best for search and rescue. I work at ups and im finding it a
little hard to get time off with a few hours of notice on friday or monday.
I would like to do a week day sar rather then wait for weekend sars.
Thanks
