As a long time search manager I feel not using a search resource 100% of the
time is stupid, ignorant, and unprofessional. However, you must be a valid
search resource. This includes working within their IC system, having
compatible communications, and having search skills--clue awareness,
tracking, navigation, etc. and playing nice with others. Look at ASTM F2209
for instance. Can your people do all, or at least some of the listed tasks.
Read Managing Search Operations (the big version, not the field guide) and
determine if you are comfortable doing hasty, trail, or even thorough
searches. These skills make you a valuable resource, and understanding how
your specific specialty interacts with others, such as dogs and trackers,
makes you even more valuable to a planner or ops.
Ignorance is curable, as is most stupidity. It just takes time and
education.
