Hi Sue, In Illinois the requesting agency does not
cover any requested team & or agency with insurance. I talked with
a VFIS Insurance agent & he confirmed that. (VFIS is a company that
covers emergency response agencies - i.e. Fire Departments & Rescue Squads,
I am not sure about Law Enforcement). although if you fall at the PD or FD
station you are covered, but you will not be in the field or going to & or
from the mission or into or out of the field.
Also team coverage & vehicle coverage is separate
from workers compensation insurance.
I have info on this if you want to contact me, Thanks
& Good Luck, Ted

Our
team does not carry insurance for us, but advises that the authority that
called us out automatically covers us. I.e. the fire department or
police requesting our assistance. Does that sound
right?
Regarding insurance, at the Illinois Horse Fair this past
weekend, I learned that the "Horseman's Council of Illinois" offers $1,000,000
insurance policy as a member benefit. Individual membership is
$39/year. You do not have to be an Illinois resident. I wonder if
it would apply while on a SAR activity? Here is web site, then go to member
benefits: http://www.horsemenscouncil.org/
Great
discussions on this list. Thanks to all!

Yes, but the devil is in the details. The authority's
insurance covers you for exactly what, and how much?

Read
the policy to find out if it would apply during SAR missions.
