MSAR Riders,
At our state SAR conference in early May, I will give a 90 minute
classroom session on MSAR, for SAR volunteers and their managers.
I have been collecting good illustrative photos (all JPEGs about
500KB, enough for digital projection), which will become a "stock"
photo gallery on the MSAR website. Can anyone contribute photos
showing the following:
* large pack strings, esp. strings packing litter components and
incident base equipment (tents, food, water, etc.)
* a pack litter in use on a horse
* dragging a litter (reaction of naive horses to seeing this
done, or to doing this; belaying from second horse or on foot
behind)
* picket lines
* minimal overnight camps
* base camp support (hauling water, etc; pack-in wall tents)
* horses calm in high-stress situations
* horses together with dogs
* dogs riding on horses, with or without a human rider onboard
(I'm kicking myself for not taking any photos of this when I
had the chance)
* horses and helicopters
* horses in deep mud or snow
* horses crossing rivers (swimming? naive horses vs experienced
ones)
* horses drinking in a context that shows how much water a horse
needs per day (this is a major issue in New Mexico; resource
managers want us to prepare to stay out overnight, but don't
consider our horses' water needs, and in drought seasons/years
surface water is not available)
* really great backcountry trailer rigs
* dangerous trailers (not hitched correctly, anything stupid, any
shortcuts)
* trailers in really tight places
* trailers in deep mud
* trailers with portable toilet onboard (in tack room, living
quarters, or temporary in horse compartment)
Re horse behavior, I am particularly interested in "before" and
"after" photos, showing the development of a good SAR horse over
time. The point to emphasize here is the enormous extent of the
training we all put into our "finished" SAR horses.
Thanks!
Una

Have you tried spraying your horseshoes w/Pam to keep the snow from adhering
to the shoes? It works w/some types of snow. Bonnie

I had a great time riding with Chris and two other members of
her unit near Big Bear Lake, CA. The terrain was steep but the
rocks were soft coarse sandstone (unlike here in New Mexico).
The sandstone wears quickly to form lovely smooth trails with
good traction. Thanks, Chris!
Here are some more thoughts on riding in snow.
My query this April about riding in snow was something I wrote
back in December 2002, that was trapped in sendmail limbo for
4 months. Since then, we have been on a second search in snow.
One horse with rim shoes had no problems with snow balls, one
with flat web shoes had large balls, and one without any shoes
at all also had balls but not as large. The depth of the "cup"
formed by the hoof and sole had a large effect on the size of
the balls; a deeper cup gives more purchase for balls to form.
The "trail" was a very slippery track across a steep slope in
a few inches of snow; in some spots, the snow covered ice.
Horses who were inexperienced in such terrain sweated heavily
from nerves, not exertion. At one point, I decided I had to
get off my mare and let her go by herself down a very slippery
slope. It was too dangerous to ride down. From that point we
returned the horses to the base camp and continued our search
on foot. Here it became important that our horses are trained
to tie well enough that they could be tied to the trailers and
left there unattended for many hours.
Riding in snow in pastures or on clear trails is one thing, but
in woods with litter on the ground, it can be dangerous. Just
like people on foot (not skis or showshoes), horses can step in
a trap of fallen branches under the snow, and break a leg.
New Mexico is at lower latitude and higher elevation that much
of the United States, so although we do get deep snow, it tends
to melt quickly, leaving mud. Sometimes the mud has a dry crust
but is many feet deep and soupy beneath the crust. This is
classic "quick sand" and extremely dangerous. Snowmobiles and
snowcats are rare for SAR; ski and snowshoe teams are typical.

Una, I enjoy the interaction w/you & other groups. Truckee is talking about
starting a mounted SAR, which would be seasonal. So, of course, I recommended
this site.We had a good time at the SAREX this weekend. Bonnie

Cool.

How about writing a trip report for all of us who didn't make
it? Was there any horse-related training? I listed SARCON
on http://www.ibiblio.org/msar/events.html because there was
supposed to be some, but from the latest program on their web
site, it appears none was offered.
Instead of SARCON, I was at a Craig Cameron "Cowboy Boot Camp"
riding clinic in Texas, which involved a road trip of 1300
miles. The clinic was outstanding, particularly the challenge
trails. I don't have time this week to write a report on it,
but I will, after our state SAR conference this next weekend.
Meanwhile, I highly recommend these clinics for MSAR folks who
ride in rough terrain.
Stay safe,

The Western States SARCON doesn't offer horse-rider training. It is
co-sponsored by CA and NV and more focused on SAR and disaster training.
Also includes more management-related training, and variety like USAR Task
Force personnel as course instructors. An excellent opportunity to get out
of the saddle and find out what the groundpounders are learning.
I must have had a premonition because while SARCON is always on my calendar,
this year I delayed sending in my registration. Sure enough, the instructor
we had scheduled to provide SAR training to local Civil Air Patrol Cadets
had to cancel and the County SAR Coordinator tapped me to fill in. I stuck
him with the dry map and compass course and had fun with an overview of the
fundamentals of SAR. <g> Wish I could have cloned myself, though, because I
always enjoy SARCON. Oh well, that way I was also here for the Swiftwater
Rescue tune-up before we head up the mountain for the long Memorial Day
weekend, stationed high on the Kern River for Swiftwater, SAR, body recovery
... and whatever. (Many of us are cross-trained in at least 2-3 kinds of SAR
training.)
NASAR (no horses) annual conference is in Reno, May 28-31.
http://www.nasar.org I'll probably be going since I missed the SARCON. But
I'd have to roll down the mountain after the long weekend, spend a day doing
laundry and be on the highway north. On the way back I'll likely stop at the
Horse Expo in Sacramento. http://www.horsexpo.com/ Their local MSAR is
usually there with a booth. The annual Western States Horse Summit will also
be there, and Backcountry Horsemen will be represented so I'll stop in to
say howdy.
Our CA OES sponsored annual SAREX location was finally decided about a week
ago: Merced County, San Luis Lake. No details yet other than the dates of
Sept 5-7. http://www.sarex.org/ MSAR and SAR courses, and some basic
USAR.
In October, SAR City (Barstow, CA) annually offers good MSAR and SAR
training, as well as other topics. http://www.bcconline.com/sarcity/ still
shows the 2002 schedule.
I've been asked to be ICP surface staff for the cave rescue team - probably
Entrance Control - but I'll let them bring back a summary from June training
in Carlsbad, NM, to share at our local July cave rescue training. ;)
If anyone was in doubt, yes, I'm a strong proponent of cross-training and
versatility for ALL SAR personnel, regardless if there is a critter
involved. ;)
