Just got forwarded this from one of our other El Paso County SAR (EPCSAR) Mounted Team Members.  Great forum.

For Heather - EPCSAR is located just south of you in Colorado Springs.  We currently have four mounted team members.  I can assure you none of us fit the cowboy description you gave.  Although I've worked cows, and use my animals for hunting as well.  All of us are part of the EPCSAR foot team as well.  We've found on a couple of missions and training sessions that the horses can be very valuble tools in both finding people, and hauling equipment, and personnel if required.  In situations where I know equipment needs hauled, I ride one horse and pony another.  I've also worked a recent mission where I rode one horse, ponied horse packed with litter, packs, and wheel, and had third horse attached with subject for extraction.

Part of the problem faced is that by the time I can respond with horses, on most of our missions, foot soldiers can be to the victum.  Our best use has been in out of county mission support.

I'm sure EPCSAR would be interested in talking with you if you'd like additional information.
