BREAKING NEWS MARCH 3, 2005 Chimpanzees escape, attack workers
near Bakersfield sancutary CALIENTE, Calif. There's wild news out of the Kern County today as some chimpanzees have seriously injured two workers after escaping from an animal shelter. Authorities say the chimpanzees escaped from their cages at a place called Animal Haven Ranch in Caliente, located about 20 miles east of Bakersfield. A spokeswoman for the Kern County sheriff's department says one of the workers had major injuries and had to be airlifted out of the compound. At least one of the chimps has been shot and killed and the search continues for others that escaped. The Kern County sheriff's department and local animal control workers are at the scene trying to track down the missing animals. Copyright 2005 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
