Temple monkey set free

Published on Jul 16, 2004

A local ling kang monkey has been freed from a metal ring that had been
fastened around its waist for three years at a Ratchaburi temple, the
liberating veterinarian said yesterday.

The monkey was originally brought to Wat Khanon by a monk who intended to
keep it as pet. The iron girdle was devised to keep it from running loose,
said Khao Prathap Chang wildlife breeding centre vet Laksana Prasithichai.

It took the rescue team 20 minutes to lure the monkey into a cage before
administering it with an anaesthetic. The ring was cut off and the monkey
was moved to Chom Bung district's Khao Prathap Chang centre.

It will be returned to the temple, in Photharam district, after it heals
from an infection contracted thanks to constant friction with the rusting
girdle.

Residents saw the friction wound had become septic and reported it the
centre.

Wat Khanon is renowned for its two-century old museum on an ancient
entertainment form called nang yai and is home to hundreds of monkeys,
most of which are docile.
