Monkey Evades Hunt in Hong Kong School

Thu Jun 17,10:19 AM ET

HONG KONG - An injured monkey found its way into a high school in bustling
downtown Hong
Kong on Thursday, startling students and slipping back into the wild after a
three-hour
chase by officials, police and a news report said.

A teacher spotted the macaque, its left arm bleeding, in the hallway of a
Kowloon
district school, said police spokeswoman Cynthia Au.

It had hopped onto the roof of the five-story school by the time officers
from the
Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department arrived, Au said.

The monkey disappeared into a forest at the edge of the town after the
officers chased it
for three hours, said a conservation department spokesman, Albert Hui.

The animal distracted the students, who rarely see monkeys in town,
Commercial Radio
reported.

It wasn't clear how the monkey was hurt, or where it came from. Nearby
"Monkey Mountain,"
is home of most of Hong Kong's roughly 1,450 wild monkeys.

In 2001, authorities spent two days chasing a monkey that apparently took a
ferry from
the Tsim Sha Tsui, crossing scenic Victoria Harbor before being it was shot
with a
tranquilizer dart.
