Legendary Bronx Zoo gorilla heads South

New York, NY, May. 25 (UPI) -- Timmy, the New York Bronx Zoo's prolific lowland gorilla, has headed South to semi-retirement after siring more than a dozen offspring.

Timmy has moved to the Louisville Zoo, along with two female members of his troop, after 25 years in the Bronx. Handlers hope the move will stimulate the 45-year-old silverback's legendary libido, the New York Daily News said.

His many offspring includes a rare set of twins.

It's a return to the Midwest for Timmy, who first came to the Bronx in 1991 after 25 years at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The Louisville Zoo's $15 million Gorilla Forest exhibit opened May 23, 2002, with 12 gorillas on loan from the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.
