Monkey recovering after cataract surgery in Zoo

Thiruvananthapuram,May 18. (PTI): Perhaps for the first time in the country, a 15-year-old male lion-tailed macaque underwent a cataract surgery in captivity in the city Zoo.

The operation was carried out through the 'key-hole method' by a team of doctors led by assistant professor of Ophthalmology attached to the government Eye hospital K Mahadevan on May 16.

"The Monkey is recovering fast and is kept in a small cage in the Zoo hospital. According to doctors, it would take at least six days for the wound to heal", Zoo Director Yalakki said.

The operation was unique as doctors not only removed the cataract ridden lens of the macaque but also fitted an artifical lens, he said.

Happy with the success of the operation, Zoo authorities have decided to perform similiar surgery on more animals suffering from cataract.
