(March 24, 2004) — Call him Datu.
That’s the name that a panel of judges today selected for the newborn orangutan in a contest at the Seneca Park Zoo.
Jason Grubb, who attends the University of Buffalo and has family in Rochester, submitted the winning name, which means nobleman or chief in the Iban language. Datu is a title used by Malay rulers in the 19th century.
A total of 2,041 entries were submitted for the contest.
The Seneca Park Zoo Society and local Tim Hortons restaurants sponsored the contest. The winner receives a number of prizes, including a bicycle.
The baby Bornean orangutan was born Jan. 29.
