A nurse was yesterday attacked and injured by a monkey in Kirinyaga District, central Kenya.
Ms Ann Mwai, 40, who works at the district hospital, was bitten in both hands.
She was preparing breakfast in her house in Kerugoya Town when the animal entered through the kitchen door and the frightened nurse dropped a pan of hot tea.
At first she thought it was a dog, but in the struggle she realised it was a monkey and screamed for help as she fought it off.
She told the Nation after being discharged from hospital that the animal, which was stoned to death by neighbours who had responded to her call for help, had come from a nearby hotel. It was kept by the hotel owner to entertain customers, and she suspected it was suffering from rabies.
She threatened to sue the hotelier, accusing him of keeping the animal illegally. "I suspect the businessman has no licence to keep the animal as he buried it immediately it was killed. If he had legal authority to keep it he would inform the Kenya Wildlife Service," she said..
