BOSTON -- A gorilla who stands 5 feet tall and weighs 280 to 300 pounds got a brief taste of freedom Wednesday at the Franklin Park Zoo.
Little Joe climbed down into the moat that surrounds his exhibit and then up and out to freedom, but returned only 10 minutes later, said zoo spokeswoman Melissa Grossenbacher.
Grossenbacher said the gorilla was spotted by some teen-agers on a summer work program at the zoo and the teen-agers and one family were quickly evacuated from the tropical forest exhibit before Little Joe got near anybody.
The incident happened just after 10 a.m. when the zoo opened, she said.
Grossenbacher says zoo officials are going to examine how Little Joe got out and make sure that nothing like that happens again.
"Escapes from zoos are not that uncommon," she said. "You just have to make sure you fix it."
