Female baby gorilla turns out to be a boy
A two-year-old gorilla, thought to be a female since
being born at a UK zoo, has turned out to be a boy.
Shanga, whose name in Swahili means astonishment, was
born at the Chessington World of Adventures in 2001.
Shanga's keeper Michael Riozzi says the discovery came
as a shock to him, because everyone treats her as a
baby girl.
He said: "Shanga is a feisty character who loves to
show off to visitors, especially children, and has
always loved a game of rough and tumble."
Chessington's consultant vet, John Lewis, says it can
take time to clarify the gender of animals like
gorillas.
He said: "You can't get close enough to really tell
one way or another, especially when they are very
young and we would never intervene unless the need was
absolutely necessary.
"From what we were able to observe we didn't detect
any signs of male genitalia in the weeks after the
birth, so we christened Shanga a girl."

Gorilla stew coming off the menu
YAOUNDE (Reuters) - Gorilla, chimpanzee and elephant will now be off the menu
in
Cameroon.
Authorities in the central African country announced on Monday that any
restaurant caught
serving meat from endangered animals could face up to three years in prison
and a fine of
more than 10,160 pounds.
Top wildlife official Denis Koulagna said the animals might be exterminated
within a
decade if hunting for so-called 'bushmeat' was not stopped.
As well as being the main source of protein for many impoverished villagers
in Cameroon's
forests, bushmeat is a delicacy for rich city dwellers.
Hunters can easily earn up to $1,000 a year -- way more than most
Cameroonians.
"Though habitat loss has often been cited as the primary cause of wildlife
extinction,
commercial bushmeat hunting has become the most immediate threat," said
Koulagna.

Young chimpanzee masters vending machine challenge
Yomiuri Shimbun
A young male chimpanzee named Ayumu at Kyoto University's Primate Research
Institute has imitated his mother and learned to use money he receives for
solving visual problems to buy snacks from a vending machine, a professor at
the institute said Saturday.
Ayumu's mother, Ai, mastered the problem-solving technique when she was 19.
Ayumu turns 3 on April 24.
"Ayumu's actions indicate the process in which knowledge and skills are
passed down from parent to child," Tetsuro Matsuzawa said.
To solve the problems, Ayumu has to identify a color shown in one corner of a
monitor and then select the appropriate kanji from several kanji shown on
another monitor.
Ayumu is awarded 100 yen if he completes the task. To receive an edible
reward, he must place the money in a vending machine and select a snack from
one of two pictures displayed on the machine.
Ai first successfully completed the process seven years ago and can now match
10 different colors with kanji with a success rate of about 90 percent,
Matsuzawa said.
Ayumu began attempting the process when he was 10 months old, but at first he
would just play around with the 100 yen coins. By July he had figured out how
to buy snacks from the vending machine, but would indiscriminately select
either of the goods on display, Matsuzawa said.
Since early this year, however, he has carefully studied his options before
choosing what he wants. Ayumu's favorites include blueberries and peanuts,
Matsuzawa said.
