Dosi, the 14-year-old chimpanzee that escaped from the Ministry of Agriculture
-Veterinary Training Institute, was shot and wounded yesterday.
But the chimp fled into the bushes before a search party could close in.
The Public Relations Manager, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Barbara Musoke,
confirmed
yesterday that the primate was sighted briefly at 2:00 p.m. in the densely
swampy area of
Kigungu landing site and shot thrice before it took off into the bushes.
When the Monitor visited the site yesterday, a combined search party of
experts from the
ministry of Agriculture, Jane Goodall Institute, UWA and security guards from
Kigungu
landing site were combing the swamp for the chimp.
"They are using sound detectors to track it," she said. "This afternoon
soundtracks were
heard in the middle of the swamp, confirming reports that the chimp has not
ventured any
further."
Ms. Musoke said that the search party is "closing in on the chimp" which had
been ordered
to be shot on sight.
Dosi is one of three male chimpanzees imported into the country from Tanzania
last
August. The primate, and another, had been quarantined as required by law of
imported
animals at the Veterinary Institute.
On Saturday, however, Dosi broke out of his cage, attacked his keeper Tony
Muhebwa,
before fleeing from the Institute.
Mr. Muhebwa lost six toes and six fingers and sustained grave injuries on his
face,
elbow, ankles and neck.
Doctors attending Mr. Muhebwa in Mengo hospital reportedly took him back to
the operating
table yesterday morning for further examination and treatment.
"They confirmed that Tony's wounds are healing fast and he is on the way to
recovery,"
Ms. Musoke said.

Kampala
THE hunt for the chimpanzee which escaped from quarantine at the Veterinary
Training
Institute in Entebbe, continued for the sixth day yesterday.
Barbara Musoke, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) spokesperson said UPDF
soldiers had
joined the hunt with orders to kill the chimp.
The primate is suspected to be hiding in areas around Kigungu Swamp, between
Kigungu
landing site and Entebbe International Airport.
Police shot at it twice on the back. Musoke said the chimp had become more
aggressive and
ruthless.
"As you know, there is nothing as ruthless as a wounded animal," Musoke
explained.
UWA sent orders to exterminate the chimp after it went on the rampage and
wounded its
keeper, Tony Muhebwa, who is hospitalised at Namirembe Hospital. Doctors said
yesterday
he was out of danger.
Trackers have indicated that the chimp is getting tired. They said they had
seen its
fresh foot marks.
Panicky residents of Mayanzi zone near Kigungu landing site and neighbouring
areas said
yesterday they returned home early for fear of the chimpanzee.
