Rescued baboons arrive at chimp sanctuary
Nine baboons are beginning new lives after being
rescued from a former safari park.
The animals, including a four-month-old baby named
Tiny, had been living at the former Causeway Safari
Park in Northern Ireland.
The park shut its gates to the public eight years ago,
and now the primates have been flown over to South
Wales, where they will live in a chimp sanctuary in
the Swansea Valley.
Graham Garen, who owns the Cefn-yr-Erw centre with his
wife Jan, said the monkeys would thrive in their new
home.
"They'll put on a lot of weight and they'll get really
sociable, just from seeing people," he said.
"They've only had their own kind for company for so
long. They'll have a good life now - they'll get
attention all day long."
The couple had originally planned to rescue the
baboons two years ago, when they brought back two
chimps from the same safari park.
But their plans were thwarted by the onset of the
foot-and-mouth crisis.
Now with the agreement of the USPCA the Northern Irish
version of the RSPCA, they have finally brought the
baboons home with them.
