Monkeys, Nose Sculpture Are Stolen
Wed Sep 25,12:04 PM ET

Twelve small South American monkeys were stolen
overnight from a zoo in St. Petersburg, a zoo official
said Wednesday, and a sculpture of the protagonist of
one the city's most famous tales — a nose — went
missing.

The thieves broke locks at the Leningrad Zoo and took
the monkeys from their glass cases, said Galina
Afanasyeva, a zoo scientist. She said the animals
needed special conditions, including air temperatures
not lower than 80-82 F. Temperatures in St. Petersburg
are currently hovering around 50 F.

Police are investigating the theft, the second this
year from the zoo. Three small monkeys that were
stolen earlier this year have been returned.

Police are also investigating the disappearance late
Tuesday of a monument to the nose that plays the
central role in 19th-century writer Nikolai Gogol's
short story, The Nose, the Interfax news agency
reported. The sculpture, made of granite, was located
on an intersection in the center of the city.

The story focuses on a St. Petersburg bureaucrat who
wakes up one day to find his nose missing. He launches
a search and is perturbed when the nose turns out to
enjoy a higher civil ranking than he.
