Schmoozing Apes, Gregarious Monkeys: New Theories on Animal Culture
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH THE ANIMAL MIND SERIES:
May 8, 2002; 7:00 p.m.

Leading primatologist Dr. Frans de Waal of Emory University talks about the
politics of primates and the issue of animal culture in his lecture
Schmoozing Apes, Gregarious Monkeys: New Theories on Animal Culture. Dr. de
Waal, renowned for his work on the social intelligence of primates, first
explored the groundbreaking notion of the cultural traits of animals in his
book Chimpanzee Politics (1982), in which he compared the schmoozing and
scheming of chimpanzees with that of human politics. Since then he has drawn
further empirical parallels that include the intergenerational transmission
of information, although always struggling against entrenched reticence to
his conclusions. His latest work, The Ape and the Sushi Master (Basic
Books, 2001) seeks to undermine the nature/culture divide.

42nd Street, Manhattan (near Bryant Park)

Time: All presentations begin at 7 p.m. and last about one hour.
