SAFEWAY YANKS 'CONGO HUNT'

A children's game that invited players to hit toy gorillas and elephants with
a plastic hammer has been removed from Safeway stores in the United Kingdom
after the supermarket chain received complaints from the Great Ape Project
(GAP), among others.

"Congo Hunt," which offered children the opportunity to "kill" plastic
animals that pop up through a board, is no longer for sale, according to
Safeway spokesman Kevin Hawkins.

"This product has been removed from our shelves," Hawkins said. "Any residual
items are leftovers from Christmas and will be removed shortly."

In addition, Safeway's U.K. division says it opposes animal cruelty and does not stock products that require animal testing.

The Great Ape Project was founded in 1994 to promote equality for non-human
great apes, including gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. The organization
includes chapters throughout Europe, Asia and South America, and is currently
conducting GAP Census, a catalogue of all the great apes held in captivity in
the United States.

For more information, please visit the GAP at www.greatapeproject.org
or e-mail GAP AT greatapeproject.org.
