THE DAILY TELEGRAPH(LONDON)
December 28, 2000, Thursday
By Rahul Bedi in New Delhi
BODY:
A TRAINED monkey hired by the authorities in New Delhi has cleared an army
of destructive rhesus monkeys out of the Ministries of Health and Urban
Development.
Officials said that in two months four-year-old Raju had dispatched scores
of monkeys from Nirman Bhawan, in the city centre. For the first time in
years employees could now move around without being set upon.
Nicknamed Rambo for his aggressive tactics, Raju growled menacingly at the
marauding monkeys, charged at them and, at times, fought them. His keeper,
Shyam Kumar, is being paid Rs5,000 ( pounds 67) a month for Raju's services.
The rhesus monkeys had been biting people, smashing windows, tearing up
files and stealing lunch boxes. Shooting them was ruled out as Hindus
associate monkeys with Hanuman, the monkey god who helped Lord Rama.
