''Hill'' producers go ape over new project

By Josef Adalian and Michael Schneider

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Two of the masterminds behind Fox's animated comedy
``King of the Hill'' have signed a deal to create a new sitcom for the
network.

The offbeat project is about a crocodile hunter who's tapped to host a TV
show in Los Angeles. The host is forced to adapt to the big city while
getting to know his on-air sidekick: a talking orangutan with attitude.

``He's a product of Hollywood, like Charlie Sheen with fur,'' said Alan
Cohen, who is developing the project with Alan Freedland. ``One of the ways
we're pitching it is, it's a buddy comedy about a human who knows more about
animals and an orangutan who knows more about humans.''

Cohen and Freedland plan to use computer imagery to bring the show's ape to
life.

The duo serve as co-executive producers of ``King of the Hill.'' They
snagged Emmys last year when the show won the outstanding animated program
(one hour or less) category.

Their deal to create a pilot for the crocodile hunter project is part of a
multiyear, overall development deal with producer 20th Century Fox
Television. The pact is pegged in the low seven figures.

Cohen and Freedland are also developing a comedy revolving around a BBC
documentary filmmaker who moves in with an all-American family in Kenosha,
Wis.
