I use a self-propelled mulching lawn mower in the paths between my beds but also run into problems with flying debris.  It's not as bad as with a string trimmer, but it is a problem, particularly with young lettuces and other tender crops.  I think my solution this year will be to move to a walk behind sickle bar mower to avoid the rotation and flying debris.  I'm curious what others use in similar strip tillage or permanent bed systems.

Our farm has a Stihl FS400 Trimmer that is used with both metal brush knife and with string head.  I would like to be able to have the trimmer used in the 2-3' paths/drains between vegetable beds but the flying debris is too much of a problem for the vegetables.  Does anybody know if any of the deflectors sold by Stihl work to protect nearby plants as well as the trimmer operator?   Or, has anybody tried to fabricate or know of fabrications of such a crop guard?

Thanks and best wishes to all,

Karen
