"Do all you people who plant by the moon
live somewhere where you can
count on continuously good soil conditions for planting all through your planting season?" I mostly use it for starting plants in the
greenhouse and have noticed that the seeds germinate much faster when I plant at
the right time. I also noticed I got a lot better results when I turned
off my security lights that didn't allow my greenhouse to be as
affected by the changing moonlight cycles which leads me to think that the
amount of nocturnal light the moon reflects to the earth is at least a good
part of the equation. One thing to remember is that not all seeds are the
same and one has to plant the right kind of seed at the right time. There
are generally three types, short germination, long germination and extra long
germination. Most vegetables are either short of extra long germination
and are planted at the same time, generally at a waxing or full moon but
most flowers are long germination which requires planting at a waning or new
moon. As I remember transplanting is generally at a waning moon for both.
Of course if conditions aren't optimal one has to adapt and deal with the
situation as it is
As for Biodynamics, moon phase planting
isn't an exclusively biodynamic practice. There is merit to some
biodynamic practices and some of it I'm skeptical about. That said,
the aloof and arrogant attitudes of SOME advocates of biodynamic practices
doesn't in itself discredit the principles involved. And in my
mind one needs to adapt practices to the varied environments one works with
and what is best for one isn't necessarily best for another although
there is a lot of commonality. In my mind there should be more
"clinical verification" and I get a bit annoyed by scorn I've gotten when all I
got was the "it just works and isn't open to scrutiny" attitude when I've looked
into whether and why some of these practices work. I don't think advocates
of biodynamics do themselves any favors by copping this sort of attitude and a
LOT of them don't, though then again a LOT do. On the other hand the
outright dismissal of older or the taking into account natural, including
extraterrestrial, influences as superstition without investigation isn't
any less arrogant or enlightened, maybe even less so, and the fact that there
isn't any data doesn't necessarily mean its not valid if nobody bothers to take
the time to put it to an honest test by so called "experts" because of the
prejudices, or even more likely, agendas, the "scientific" community has at the
present time. I find its a lot wiser to keep an open mind and use the best
of what you find and what works best for your situation along the way without
being blinded by dogma of various types whether it be "scientific (a lot of what
is called scientific isn't very objective or open minded but prejudiced by
economic, political, social and a host of other pressures to see what it wants
to see while suppressing evidence it finds inconvenient or
insignificant ignoring quite a bit for the sake of seeing what it wants to
see for any number of reasons) but hopefully it will evolve to a better
understanding and as such be truly scientific), "biodynamic" or whatever.
Sometimes if things seem to work I just go with it but I still try to understand
why while not fooling myself into believing I actually and definitively know
why. I mean one has to have theories but when the theory doesn't fit the
facts find a new theory that seems to, realizing that may also only be a
temporary working model. Anybody that thinks they know it all or think
that any "system" has all the answers doesn't know very much but beware of
people with agenda's, whether it be religious zealots, people waving the flag
and calling anybody that doesn't tow the line or fit the definition of their
version of patriot" "traitors", or "scientists", bought and paid for by
corporations, nationalist interests or other perverting interests. Respect
others who also think for themselves even if they don't agree with you
because those are the people you can learn a lot from whether you can see it or
not now because even if they are wrong they will help you by pointing out a
different way of looking at things that may give you a wider persective you may
not have seen before.
