We have a huge glut of eggs right now, and very little
market until June. We have kept our layers on 16 hours of light. We are at 14
hours natural light now. Memory is that they slow down (small molt?) in late
July/August each year as daylight decreases. I am thinking of turning the
lights off now, and maybe inducing any molt that they would do in July/August
when we have large market? Does this make sense? I guess I could actually do
the take away feed to really induce a molt, but haven’t been of that
mindset in the past. We would plan on retiring these hens late December/next
January, after the holiday baking market and weekly fall farmers market. Thank you. Beth Spaugh http://rhomestead.com
