Todd,
My snaps are field grown. I've got lots of flowers planted, ageratums, zinnias, basils, sunflowers, amaranths, etc... just nothing blooming right now with the snaps. I've tried larkspur, bachelor buttons, and agrostemma, for early blooms, but they bloom earlier than my snaps. I always seem to have a gap. I need something to go with snaps. I don't know if I should be planting snaps earlier, or possibly later?

All the early ones, yes. Second round started in Feb and sized up to 4" pots are all now starting to yield cuttings outside. On Sat, May 12, 2012 at 9:24 PM, Carla Maness <manessfarm AT gmail.com> wrote:

Mike,
I'm really quite an amateur. Johnnies seeds, Plant a ton and reap the best. In the 36" bed I'm 5 rows 8" oc and it makes a dense hedge. I had a number of fallen and crooked necked plants. The hoop environment really pushes these things vertically. I will be using the horizontal grid from now on. this has done wonders for our zinnias. 6x6 squares, plastic net on rows of tee posts makes a great grid for flowers to grow up through and then be restrained from falling. Consistantly our zinnias go 7-8 feet by August. Wind and blowing rain be damned..Succession planting gives us a million long stems all season. plus, if you pull the mesh snug it holds w/o fasters and can be moved a bit to the right elevation early on.

Basil.
We grow four kinds strictly for the flowering greens for the bouquets. Might be our most important flower crop. 60' double plants every 16" down a 36" bed.

Zinnias lead the charge.
Ageratum, snaps, bach buttons, gomphrena (globe amaranth), lavender, strawflower, echinacea, Foxglove, Opopeo amaranth, Black Eyed Susan and celosia, we use Flamingo Feather
Just about anything that grows in your zone.

I picked our first flowers today, which I'm glad to have for Mothers Day weekend at market, but as is typical for me, the only thing I have are snapdragons. Buckets and buckets of snaps. What other flowers would bloom at the same time as snaps? I do mixed bouquets for my market, and obviously it's hard to make a mixed bok when I don't have anything else to mix!Any ideas, information, etc... is greatly appreciated so maybe I can plan a little better for next year. Thanks!CarlaPerkins, OKOn Fri, May 11, 2012 at 8:20 AM, Vern and Amy <vaspencer AT sisna.com> wrote:
I know others are having trouble with heat and drought. It finally
stopped raining last week and a cold front blew in for two days. It was
20 degrees this morning. The row cover in the hoophouse was starting to
freeze laying on top of 100 flats of tomato and pepper starts. I turned
on a couple milkhouse heaters before the sun came up and sprinkled the
cherry tree blossoms with the pre-drained hose to try saving them, too.
Have a great day!
