Fertility is just endless organic compost and worm casting amending. Occasional fish/seaweed.

Carla,
This year for the first time I attempted to have flowers for the start of our market season, which this year was April 7th. We made it with a great variety of flowers. Our booth has been loaded with flowers each week from the start. A first. I spent about $160 on propane during this very mild Feb-March. Depending on type, I like to start flowers in trays in early Feb. I start my first tomatoes the first week of January. This year I started the flowers with the toms. Usually it ends up being late May before we have strong flowers. This year the house had lots of blooms starting in late march
Outside we now have Zinnias, Globe Amaranth, snaps, Opopeo Amaranth, Bach Buttons, purple and yellow coneflower, Foxglove, Larkspur and tons of basil in flower.
This mild winter has had good and bad impact.
Can't imagine this whole thing w/o the houses.

Basil.
We grow four kinds strictly for the flowering greens for the bouquets. Might be our most important flower crop. 60' double plants every 16" down a 36" bed.

Ageratum, snaps, bach buttons, gomphrena (globe amaranth), lavender, strawflower, echinacea, Foxglove, Opopeo amaranth, Black Eyed Susan and celosia, we use Flamingo Feather
Just about anything that grows in your zone.

I picked our first flowers today, which I'm glad to have for Mothers Day weekend at market, but as is typical for me, the only thing I have are snapdragons. Buckets and buckets of snaps. What other flowers would bloom at the same time as snaps? I do mixed bouquets for my market, and obviously it's hard to make a mixed bok when I don't have anything else to mix!Any ideas, information, etc... is greatly appreciated so maybe I can plan a little better for next year. Thanks!CarlaPerkins, OKOn Fri, May 11, 2012 at 8:20 AM, Vern and Amy <vaspencer AT sisna.com> wrote:
I know others are having trouble with heat and drought. It finally
stopped raining last week and a cold front blew in for two days. It was
20 degrees this morning. The row cover in the hoophouse was starting to
freeze laying on top of 100 flats of tomato and pepper starts. I turned
on a couple milkhouse heaters before the sun came up and sprinkled the
cherry tree blossoms with the pre-drained hose to try saving them, too.
Have a great day!
