I’ve set my greenhouse up in a similar fashion: we use an outdoor wood furnace/boiler to heat the house, and in the spring I open a second line to the greenhouse that feeds into both a radiator with a fan on a thermostat behind it, and into a length of ½” pex tubing that makes four passes under a 3’ wide, 40’ long bench that holds most of my early starts. I used the system on a 10’ section of the bench for a few years, and expanded it to the full length last spring. I drape plastic over this bench to create a greenhouse-within-a-greenhouse on cold nights, and use the fan/radiator combination to blow heat into the rest of the greenhouse on any colder nights that come along once I’ve outgrown this first bench. I’ve been very pleased with the performance, though I can’t really speak to the efficiency since the wood we’re burning is heating the house, too.

Cheers,

Rob

Subject: [Market-farming] Heating seedling trays

I’m looking for people’s experience heating seedling trays.  I’ve used heat pads in the past but I saw a system recently on a farm near Olympia, Washington.  This system consisted of a hot water tank used to heat water which was circulated through small diameter tubes under seedling trays.  The farmer indicated that it was a less expensive system to run than resistance heat pads.  I’m wondering what the experience is of people on this site and what their recommendations would be for efficiently heating seedling trays.  Any and all thoughts would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Roy
