indeed, household batteries are not cheap and are certainly the worst
part of the equation. I have HUP Solar ones, huge and heavy and yes
filled with acid. But they've worked great for 10 years now. Sometimes
the phone companies have used household batteries that they use for
backups and replace long before expiration and sell. Our first were
these and lasted 15 years.
This area has always been far off grid and the costs to bring it in were
huge but civilization is beginning to encroach and the possibility of
connecting to the grid would eliminate the batteries. After so many years
of being my own power company it would be weird to not be able to control
it.!
