It wouldn't be economically practical to have a solar system that didn't have the capability to feed back into the grid would it? Can you justify a 12 volt solar system? Is the solar 12 volt system eligible for partial government subsidy (Reimbursement)?

Rivka,That is the problem, it is not isolated from the grid. That is why it
shutsMaury
off if the grid goes down. Safety first.
This seems so very counter intuitive to me! The solar produces 12 volt
power which is a tame kitten compared to the behemoth grid. With my
batteries I never even know when town is out of power. I love my 12 volt
fridge that can power directly off the panels. I believe there could be a
shut off or breaker to the grid in your electrical box. Then you could
isolate and use the 12 volt power you are producing when the grid is down.

I agree that such a system should have an interrupt so that you can continue to use the solar system off grid. Not having this defeats PART of the purpose of having your own power generating system.
Not all solar systems are 12V and produce a large amount of power. If you are tied to the grid you are not running a 12V system. Maybe you are confusing 12V with DC vs AC power.
A lot of personal solar systems have enough amps in the them to kill a human, so I would be wary about suggesting otherwise in a public forum.
