Thanks Etienne, good information.
What does boron toxicity look like?

Agronomic Borax is 15$ for 10 lbs at my local feed store. I ended up
buying 10l (2.5 gallons) of 10% liquid Solubor for 75$; I should have
enough boron for the next five years. I would look for that instead of
using boric acid.
Dosage is very tricky, as boron can be toxic to plant at fairly low
concentration. I sprayed (with a backpack sprayer) a 0.001% boron
solution by volume, and potatoes responded positively; it didn't killed
the beets either. Of course, your mileage may vary, so read the label
and/or ask your extension agent! :)
But before I would do any of that, I would start with a soil test. Mine
tested boron at 0.54 ppm (using hot water extraction). It's recommended
to supplement boron when soil level is below 1.1 ppm.
