Thanks so much, Rivka.  The Lexmark you mention (or another laser printer) may be the way to go.  I'll check it further when I get back to US later this month.

One of the 4 cartridges in the pack was opened/installed and was probably defective and what killed the printer.  However, nobody takes anything back in Dominica -- even if defective.   No consumer protections --  "Let the buyer beware."  ugh.  So many 1st world privileges/rights lacking, although made up for by so many blessings of different kinds.

All best wishes,

Karen

Karen, it did come through; I didn't reply because I didn't know what to tell you. I can tell you that my Lexmark X4530 is Mac compatible, has been working since September 2008, and seems to have reasonably waterproof ink -- I just ran a well-dried page I was done with under the tap and tried to smear it, and it didn't smear. It has, however, only two cartridges, one black and one for all the other colors; and it seems to me to use quite a bit of ink, though I don't know how much most others use, so I can't say how it does in comparison with others.

I think it's possible you might want not to go with an inkjet but to spend the money on a color laser printer, as I hear they use a lot less ink; but I might be wrong about that.

Oh -- one other thing. If you haven't opened those replacement ink cartridges for the Canon, the place you brought them from might take them back.

I never saw this come through and also never saw a response, so am sending again.    Best wishes to all,  Karen

JUST after I choked and bought replacement inks here in Dominica for megabucks for my Canon MX700, the printer died.  Fixing it more expensive than buying new (immoral) and would require bringing back to U.S..  We use the printer for labels for our produce that sometimes get wet at market.  Does anyone have a recommended printer/scanner/copier model:
that comes with or can use waterproof inks (hopefully, sparingly) and
that maybe has separate cartridges for all colors (our logo uses up yellow and magenta way before cyan) and also for black  and
that seems sturdy/reliable with potential for a long life
that has reasonable print speeds
that is Mac compatible?

My previous Epson C-84 met all those qualifications -- except for long life.  Got caught by a CSS Counter Reset message that can't resolve.

Thanks and best wishes to all,
