I have volunteers who do work for me,
sometimes using hoses. I’ve discovered some of them do things that will
result in leaks in hose connections. Sometimes they don’t like the way
the watering wand is positioned, so they’ll take it off and put it back
on. They will sometimes cross the threads and there is no seal. Water leaks all
over. Then, hoses today often come with plastic hose-end fittings. Once you
cross them, they are hard to fit properly. They want to follow the new track
created by the crossing of the threads. After time you just have to cut off the
old fittings and buy replacements. Then you run into the situation where the
replacement fitting isn’t installed properly and it leaks. I find my self
repairing repair jobs sometimes. Then there are those folks who like to kink
the hose to stop water flow. It’s easy! But it results in the hose wall
breaking down and breaking open at the sharp points of the kinks. Sometimes
this happens accidently, but when it is repeated the hose breaks down. There’s
also the issue of letting pressure build up in those hoses. Often this happens
when they are kinked or when the little swivel valves are put on the hose ends,
just before a nozzle or wand. It is convenient to “turn off” the
water right there. But then if it’s left that way for who knows how long,
the pressure in the hose works on the fittings. If they’ve been kinked or
if pressure is high, the integrity of seals just starts to break down. When I was an undergrad I had a couple of
projects in the University greenhouse. The greenhouse manager was a “drill
sergeant” about how folks handled hoses. I didn’t like it but later
I appreciated how important good hoses were and how good habits made a huge
difference in how they worked and how long they lasted. Water under pressure is
incredibly capable of discovering and exploiting weak points. Bill William H. Shoemaker Sr. Research Specialist, Food Crops 630-584-7254, FAX-584-4610 From: market-farming-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org
