I make cages the same way Bill described, but I cut the 5' wide strip every 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 feet (haven't made a cage in a few years). I use the extra 1/2 foot to make the hooks like Bill describes. When I make some more, I think I may cut them a foot shorter for each cage as some varieties don't really fill in the larger diameter cage.

Bill,
Is your wire made with 6"squares? If so,48"makes 8 squares. Sounds like a small cage.

We use #10 concrete wire by cutting the 5' wide strip every 4'. We then roll each into a cylinder and use wire stub ends turned in to hook them together. We set them over plants early, set a tomato stake solidly in the ground between each pair of cages, then tie both cages to the stake with a twist tie. If we don't stake them, they will get blown over once the plants fill them up. The stakes are usually sufficient to keep them upright through the season.
