Peas do very well in the cold weather, even if the hard frosts hits them time after time.

Subject: [Market-farming] Pea transplant question

Recently, there was a discussion on starting peas in the greenhouse and then transplanting. I am trying that this season but have a few questions. First, I am in Massachusetts where the weather has warmed up but frost may be a problem for awhile. The seedlings will need to go into the ground soon, so I am thinking of planting them into black plastic (the plastic is warming the soil and will be slit to accommodate a couple of rows of peas) so that they won’t stall out when planted. I can cover with remay if frost is predicted. I am wondering if this idea is completely nuts and whether the black plastic will prove to be too hot for peas. Thanks for your help.

Nora
