We're on city water, but we're expanding enough this year that using city
water for irrigation uses could bump us up into a higher rate category. We
just purchased several large tanks that could be used to collect, filter and
store water from the house roof, which is older asphalt shingles. I'm
tempted to use that as an irrigation source but I wonder what sort of trace
minerals might come off the roof and go into the soil if I go that
route. We also have an old well and seasonal ponds on the farm that could
be pressed into service, if initial water quality testing came back with
acceptably clean results. I wonder if this is the year to switch over to
one of those other sources? Anyone out there using pond water or roof
collection water for their gardens? If so, how has that worked out for
you?
