Robert:  Thanks for the link -- interesting findings -- guess I won't trim either onions or leeks.
 
Pam:  A few weeks back someone on this list said they trimmed their onions and got stronger transplants and bigger bulbs, and I know of local farmers in CO who do the same, but after following this link, think I'll just leave them alone.
