With fluorescent lights the distance from the plants is about one inch. Halogen lights are very hot. You might cook the plants if you get them close enough. Don't know the physics well enough to say more.

we recently got a cheap solar collector from Harbor Freight and my husband is keen on figuring out how to run the plant lights on the solar panels/batteries. He can run a bank of 4 florescent fixtures for about 3 hours from the battery (and he will likely figure out how to run them longer as he has been playing with his new toy for under a week). But we are now thinking what are our other options for lighting, especially 12v lighting. We know about the LED systems but gosh they are expensive. But they can be run on a 12 v system easily, they last far longer than florescence and they do not have mercury in them. but as I said they are very expensive. I believe we would need to spend around $3k to light our seed room. Anyone use the LEDS and are they worth it in your opinion?

So we were in TSC yesterday and he looked at the tractor flood lights which are something like 1000 watts halogen, 12 volt and under $40. has anyone used such lighting for starting seedlings? If so how far away can we keep the plants before they start to go leggy? Right now the thought is to hang them from the ceiling but maybe that is too high (ceiling is about 8')

At any rate we are excited about our first baby steps towards getting off the grid.
